Teys Australia Response to this web site

Some Large Corporate Companies consider themselves “Above The Law”, some Mega Corporations consider themselves as  being private institutions, not playing by the rules.
Freedom of speech against their company or product, is generally counter attacked by playing the Big Bully. They use Political, Media and Legal pressure, having deep pockets, they starve their opposition with their wealth, power and influence beyond the average persons grasp.

I t seems, I am about to find out if  Teys Bros Beenleigh fit in the above description.

Four days after this website went public, Teys Bros Beenleigh hit back with a letter from their lawyers, giving me four days to remove reports and my thoughts from the website.

They specifically demand I remove specific documents that I believe prove their guilt of ignoring the public and lack of Duty of Care to the general surrounding public.

After dragging me to the supreme court in August 2012, I was forced to remove these documents.

WHY?

In my opinion, this is because real statistics and specific data, will always prove that  Teys Australia Beenleigh operation presents to the general public.

In my opinion, real data has probably never seen the light of day.

In my opinion, Teys Australia Beenleigh actually hide the operations actual effects the surrounding area and the public.

In my opinion, Teys Bros Beenleigh, have always know how much they effect the public and just kept it quiet.

In my opinion, Teys Bros Beenleigh do not have a moral right to do this, the must take responsibility and a Duty of Care to everyone not just their staff, but they have deeper pockets and to save money I do not have, I agreed to remove these documents.

My reply to their letter is here.

Public Apology –

In Teys Australia’s lawyers letter, it notes that I have on this website, attacked and made various claims against the Teys Family.

To be fair, Teys Bros, Teys Bros Beenleigh and or Teys Australia “the business”, has always had partners, not long ago one of these partners was the “Packer Family” and today their partner is the worlds largest Food Processing company “Cargill”.

It was wrong to single out and accuse the Teys family and I sincerely apologize for any discomfort or embarrassment. As a large corporate conglomerate it was unfair to single out individual Teys family members and or the Family as a whole.

However, in my opinion, the practices of the Teys Australia, Teys Bros Beenleigh and or Teys Bros operation at Beenleigh, is a Danger to the surrounding area as described by the reports posted on this website.

In my opinion, These reports lay a black mark over this corporations Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Duty of Care.

Teys Beenleigh has been employing local people and helping the local economy since 1946 and is part of Beenleigh’s history. It is disappointing when groups/organisations such as yourself start your propaganda. Teys Beenleigh has not moved address, it was the developers who have moved into an area which for most of time was semi rural. They developed the sites and people were more than happy to purchase their properties knowing full well that they were purchasing a property which was in close proximity
to a large manufacture plant (ABATTOIR). Purchasers should have considered the risks involved (if any) and possibly questioned the developers and council for that matter re: developing land so close to a abattoir.

If the abattoir had moved or just recently opened its doors than I could understand the concerns raised. This has not happened, so before people start signing petitions and carrying on, maybe they need to think about why they didn’t consider these risks (if any) before signing on the dotted line.

In all my time that I have lived in the area, I have never known of anyone contracted the dieases you mention in your flyers & website.

I wonder, have you consider what will happen to the employees who are trying to pay off their mortgages and their children if this company was to shut it’s doors. I am sure that you have NOT even consider it….

      Dear Joan Smith
everything you have said is true, Teys Bros Beenleigh have been in the same site for many years, but it is Local City council who have opened the area up to developers causing this situation and Teys Bros Beenleigh themselves who have sold their land to developers. And it is Teys Bros Beenleigh responsibility to make their operation safe to the Public.

Teys Bros Beenleigh have conducted their business in the same site since the early 1980’s without upgrading their their Cattle Holding Yards to meet the current health requirements. These Cattle Holding Yards are the same today as they were in the 80s and it is these holding yards that are the incubators of Q Fever.

Teys Bros Beenleigh are no longer tucked away in the bush but are now less that 1 kilometer from the CBD of Beenleigh.

When a outbreak occurs (and it will occur) thousands of unsuspecting people will be affected, many will hospitalized and some may die, this happened this year not that long ago in Europe.

Teys Bros Beenleigh blatantly Breach their own licence to operate this business, even today as I type this response they are in breach and have been for more than a year, and neither the Logan City Council or DERM will commit to do anything about it.

If Teys Bros Beenleigh stay, they must at least take responsibility and modernise their Cattle Holding Yards to today’s standards to protect the public.

I agree with everything you say, but as they have grown they must abide by the laws given to them as they expand. Teys are operating illegally, theu operate outside their licence, they operate with no duty of care and no one not even you care. But if you get sick because of their operation, I bet you will be the first to point the finger. All I ask is that they operate within their licence, but it seems I am the only one. Everyone else from the Logan City council, Qld Health and DERM are too scared to act.

why should teys brothers be shut done , teys brothers was here well before any housing development went up, they have been there well before the 70’s . So no i wont sign this petition think its a load of garbage.!~

    • Concerned Citizen's avatar

You say this because you do not know the facts. Browse the website and read the evidence. Teys are operating illegally, they operate outside their operational licence and have done so for years.

I have to agree with Joan Smith. I’ve been living in Edens Landing since 1989 when it was just a dust bowl with a few houses in it and guess what…..Teys Bros was already there. Why should they shut down just because council agreed to allow housing development on adjoining land? They should never have allowed that much development that close to an abattoir, it’s so ridiculous that Alberi Park got approved and if you buy into that estate then you do so knowing it backs onto the meat works along with it’s supposed health risks.

I’m not in support of the closure of Teys Bros. but I do think that thought should have gone into moving it well before further development was approved for the area and the developers should have to compensate Teys Bros. moving costs. They were there first. Teys Bros. employs hundreds of local people and is a major contributor to local industry it would have huge effects for it to be simply shut down.

I hear what you’re saying about the health risks and it is a concern but development that close should never have gone ahead. I’d perhaps sign a petition to have it moved but not closed.

I agree with everything you say, but Teys are operating outside the Law. They are in Breach of their operational licence. The licence says one thing and they do another but no one has the power to stand up to them, Not Logan City Council, Not the Queensland Health nor DERM. They do as they please and put peoples heath at risk. People have been getting Q fever without knowing, some have had it so bad that only after they are hospitalized do they realize what they have. It will happen again and this time we will know where to lay the blame.

cant u just get the Q fever immunisation if you are really that concerned? i have never really put much thought into Q fever spreading by wind? i thought u had to have direct contact with the infected cow or its “waste matter” to become infected? but in saying that, not every cow has Q fever. It is a concern yes as there are many family’s living in close proximity toTeys.. but how great is the danger? i have lived in holmview for approx 5 yrs now and i have never heard of any cases? news reports? this is an interesting and important topic.

    • Concerned Citizen's avatar

      All your questions are good.
Every person working at Teys Bros Beenleigh must be inoculated against Q fever every year.
Every regular visitor to their factory is also recommended to take the antidote.
Reports from Queensland Experts say that Q fever can travel up to 18 kilometers, Queensland Health say living within 1 Kilometer of Teys Bros Beenleigh is ‘High Risk”.
A new report from the UQ is worried that most Q fever case go undetected until it is too late.

      The unfortunate facts are ….

      1. Q fever is a air borne bacterial infection. It causes flu-like symptoms such as a high temperature, muscle pain and headaches and is very dangerous; miss diagnosis is extremely common as it is often mistaken as the common flu.
In Australia Humans usually become infected by inhaling Cattle yard dust carried through the air by the wind, which can be spread up to 18 kilometers from the source.
People most at risk of getting Q fever are those whose occupation and environment brings them into close contact with livestock: Close contact can mean anything up to 18 kilometres depending on the wind.

      2. A letter from Queensland Health warn Q fever effects, can be felt up to 5 kilometres from Teys Bros Beenleigh.

      3. Teys Bros Beenleigh operational licence from the Queensland Government office of DERM dictates, Teys Bros Beenleigh must not effect anyone or anything beyond its boundaries.

In my opinion, the above points prove Teys Bros Beenleigh are in BREACH of their operational licence and operate in a dangerous and illegal manner. Queensland Governments department of DERM acknowledge their breach, the Queensland Health Department and the Logan City Council are aware of their breach and yet none have taken action to protect the public.
Next time your at the doctor, just to be on the safe side get a Q fever test.

Five years ago I did not even know what Q fever was. Then suffering from severe headache, raging temperature, sweats and feeling like death warmed up I was admitted to hospital for 10 days and was diagnosed with Q fever. I did not work in an position that exposed me to the Q fever risk. No-one at work developed Q fever. Infectious disease Physicians were unable to understand how I contracted Qfever. Obviously my big risk factor was I reside less than a kilometer from where they unload the cattle truck trains. I am one of the many that live within the area, who has contracted Qfever and been seriously ill. Not everyone symptoms are severe how many people have been undiagnosed or thought to be the flu. Both myself and my grandson constantly cough and have issues when odours are released from teys brothers particularly of a night.

    • Concerned Citizen's avatar

Hi , I am sure your not the only person who has Q fever in the Teys Australia effected area, it sound to me you had chronic Q fever. I am sure there are more unsuspecting residents with chronic Q fever and thousands with acute Q fever who dont even know what it is.

sorry but no..you only need a q-fever shot once in a lifetime..i agree maybe they could pay for residents vaccination..but the way you act is like its the plague or something?! i agree the facilities should be upgraded to regulations, but to shut it down where so many families and people rely on that job..if by any chance it is shut down, good luck and i hope not hear any complaints about there being no meat at your supermarkets…build your own farm then

    • Concerned Citizen's avatar

Actually, the q fever shot is not always successful, from some reports that I have read, it also does not work with the young and the elderly.
To be honest, I don’t want them shut down, but Teys Australia must take responsibility and modernise their out dated Holding yards, but they just refuse to take that responsibility by saying exactly what their supporters say, “We were here first piss off and go somewhere else”, not good news for the thousands of families already living there. As for the jobs, Teys are moving sooner or later and when that happens the great loyalty they have to the area will disappear. And as for your “no meat in the supermarket comment, a little melodramatic don’t you think? I have nothing against meat, I just think that Teys must take responsibility with their illegal (because they do not operate within their operational licence) and dangerous business.

Children under 15 are not allowed to have Q Fever shots. There are also side effect from taking the vaccination.

I have been living 1.5km’s away from tey’s for the past 4 years. And the last 3 years my husband and i have been getting headaches all the time. Last year when my daughter was 10 month old she got really sick. She complained that her whole body was sore, she could not walk and could not keep food or water down. And also had high temps. It toke me two days to try and get her to the doctors between driving there and getting half way she would be in the back seat being sick every were. Or there was no available appointments.Ater all that i made it to the doctors and all they can say is she had they flu really bad and they could not do anything about it. She was like this for a week. Also my husband works afternoon shift and drives past teys twice a day and every night he comes home he always complains of the smell. Now seeing this web site makes me think that it’s not the lack of sleep from having children that sleep all night. An that it might just be the area we have brought in. There is alot of empty land out towards Beaudesert way. I think it’s time to forget about making more money and being there for along time and just agree that it is time to move on. The area is just getting bigger and the longer they stay the more problems they are going to have. They need to come to the terms that they might be making people sick. And just be the bigger man and move. It will save them alot of money with the court fees.

I live not so far from the horrible disgusting smell that comes from that place
we don’t get visitors anymore as they can’t stand the smell
even Saturdays and Sundays the smell just wont go away
we bought our place around five years ago .On inspection we didn’t smell a thing ,even asked the previous owners about smells coming from the works.
    well they lied to us,
It most be doing something to our heath breathing it in.
its a built up area ow.
    it has to go.
    No questions asked

I totally agree with you, the disgusting smell that comes from this place is intolerable. I viewed and purchased a home in the area unaware of the bad smelling air. What action can I take to eliminate this foul odour into our community. I personally don’t want to see men unemployed but really do we have to put up with this offensive unhealthy air that we are forced to breathe especially when you have to drive through it. I’m willing to give up my time to fight a cause worth fighting for. Have the M.P.s been made aware of these issues. Please advise.

Do you drive past cattle trucks? The smell from the trucks are worse than what I normally smell from teys. Do you shut your windows and air vents to prevent the dust from entering your vehicle? I’ve heard that you can get q fever from that too. If you knew enough to ask about the smell, why would you buy there? Just as I wouldn’t buy iin an area that floods, or near a chicken farm or under major powerlines, it is up to the buyer/rented to be responsible for their own choices.

Bravo concerned citizen, your a brave person for questioning such an emotive issue as this one. Some people feel the economic issue takes precedence over the right of all people to a healthy living environment, it doesn’t. Far more people are affected by the dangers from the pollution, than by loss of jobs (which is understandably upsetting), however a small group of people should not be undermining the health of the general population. The terrible odours may be a sign that dangerous and unhealthy particulate matter is being released. Concerned Citizen, I would be curious to know if you have received any feedback or interest from the new state environmental agencies? By the way I am at Mount Warren Park, several kms away, and still the odour and pollution is extending well beyond Teys Bros boundaries, and of late the offending odour’s frequency is increasing. Again thankyou Concerned Citizen for braving the predictable intimidation from a corporation such as this.
