Shut Down Teys Bros Beenleigh
In my opinion, Someone needs to warn all the Mum and Dad’s who strive to achieve the Australian Dream and own their own home, raise their children in a safe secure homes and healthy environments.
I was part of court with the Logan City Council and Teys Brothers Beenleigh over a 500 meter Buffer Zone imposed on my development application. I fought tooth and nail, until, my own Infectious Disease consultant explained to me that any persons living within 5 kilometers of Teys Beenleigh would be at High Risk in contracting a most hideous and dangerous disease called Q-Fever.
In my opinion, Q-Fever is something that Teys Brothers Beenleigh are very familiar with, every person working in any part of the site is inoculated every year, even regular visitors are inoculated.
In my opinion, Teys Brothers Beenleigh have set in place extreme measures to protect themselves and their staff from this terrible disease.
But, for the surrounding public, the everyday persons who work, live or drive by everyday, have been purposely kept in the dark, Teys Bros Beenleigh and the several levels of government they have kept it a secret and battled in court, confuse with red tape or just plainly ignore anyone who brings it up.
On this site you will be able to read numerous expert reports regarding the High Risk to personal health, one of which warns of the health risk of any person living within 18 kilometers of Teys Bros Beenleigh.
In 2006, Dr John Olsen of the Mater Private in Brisbane submitted this report for the court proceedings between Teys Bros Beenleigh and Joseph Rakatau.
In this report Dr Olsen talks about 18 kilometer radius of danger. Dr Olsen’s report is a most comprehensive report, delving into details of what Q – Fever is, where it comes from and how it effects humans and how it effected Mr Joseph Rakatau.
The court case was settled out of court and subject to a confidentiality agreement, which brings to mind multiple questions like, how many more cased have been settled out of court, how many locals didn’t even know they contracted the disease, how many times have Teys Bros Beenleigh swept this issue under the carpet.
Further to these reports, evidence suggests that the delivery of live stock to the premises could very well be even a greater risk to the unsuspecting general public.
Truck loads of semi trailers delivering the live stock enter and exit from the premises, (always using main populated roads) and whilst doing so, excrement from the live stock seep through their holdings and trailer floors and are deposited on the public roads.
This leaves a brown stain on the roads and when dried becomes “dust or particular waste” infecting vehicular air conditioning and sticking to rubber tyres; this manner of distribution could conceivably distribute contaminated and dangerous infectious disease particles far beyond the anticipated area and in fact could spread air borne diseases like Q Fever through out highly populated areas.
In my opinion, Given the “High Risk of Danger” of contacting an Infectious disease by the general public (as stated in a letter to me by the Qld Health department , it is imperative for Public Safety that DERM and the Logan City Council review the Teys operation and investigate their compliance in all areas of their licences and practices.
In my opinion, The Logan City Council are so worried about the danger of Q-Fever that in the case of my Development; and in response to my Development Application submitted for a Residential Housing Estate, they responded by placing a 500 meter buffer zone on the land, but at the same time they approved the “Vale” Residential Estate being constructed by Stockland Residential Developers.
In my opinion, I believe that the Logan City Council are in error by approving this development and any other development anywhere near Teys Bros Beenleigh. The Queensland Health Department letter show great danger and High Risk especially with 5 kilometers radius from Teys Bros Beenleigh.
Teys Brothers Beenleigh’s Queensland Government DERM licence, states very clearly that “any part of the operation cannot impact on any part of the surrounding area, outside their boundaries, as specified as a repeated ‘special condition” in their DERM licence.
In my opinion, Teys Australia, Logan City Council, DERM and Queensland Health are aware that Teys Bros Beenleigh operation is of “High Risk and Dangerous” to the general public in the areas of Dust, Odour and Infectious Disease, which according to the Queensland Health department and other experts, could travel well over
But I had already made a official complaint in March 2012 to DERM ( Queensland’s “Watch Dog” on Environmental issues), regarding the reported HIGH RISK of danger to the general public by the activities undertaken by Teys Bros Beenleigh.
And in response, DERM themselves have revealed, they were aware that Teys were in breach in several areas of their licence and say it will take “some time” to for Teys to be fully compliant.
I felt this was totally unacceptable and requested a meeting to discuss and understand what they planned to do about it.
The steps taken by Logan City Council took on my development are correct and true, but their actions greatly fall short in protecting the general public, there are thousands of unsuspecting people who are buying Houses and Land in the surrounding new Residential Developments
Dr Olsen’s report estimates that dust and disease particles could affect up to 18 kilometers radius from the Teys Bros Beenleigh Abattoir, this in population terms could reach out up to 400,000 people.
If DERM, the Logan City Council,Teys Bros Beenleigh and Developers cannot guarantee safety to the surrounding public in the described area of the expert reports and beyond, the operation of the business must be closed down immediately.
As mentioned, I have uploaded for everyone to see copies of the DERM complaint form and expert relevant reports and documents for your review.

From the research I’ve done for myself, this seems like common practice for any abbotoir. Also, your information would be wrong, as you don’t need to be immunised more than once, as once you have been vaccinated, you are immune to the disease. That’s why the Q-Fever Registry exists, it keeps a list of people who are immunised, so they can work with stock animals (cattle yards are not the only cause, kangaroos, cats, dogs and ticks also can spread the disease). Teys Bros are actually complying to industry standards by doing this, and that doesn’t seem to help your case at all.
Here’s some links, as you seem unable to provide external links to back up your claims.

Why do you say that you live 1.2 kilometres from Teys and then three lines later say “I reside less than a kilometre from where they unload the trucks?” This is a joke and you’re only trying to ruin the livelihoods of many locals for you own personal gain because you aren’t getting your own way with your land. Think of the people working at Teys – they are working, just as we all do, to go home and feed our families. Why should it be shut down for you? Your negligence towards your own health and past alleged Q-Fever diagnosis sounds liike nothing more than an internet self-diagnosis. Can we see the doctor’s report? We’ve all had health dramas in our lives, get over it.
Jess, your comment over .2 is ridiculous, Mr X’s comment was 1k, when I measured it it was 1.2. I have seen the medical document diagnosing Q fever, but due to pending legal action I cannot display it. You loyalty to big business over public health safety is commendable. As for my self gain that is at a end, Teys Australia, Logan City Council and Queensland Health have made sure of that, this is now a fight for justice for my family that live in the area.
Also in the not to distant future Teys will leave and when they do there loyalty to the locals will be ” tough luck”.
In the mean time here are some facts for you to think on
1. Q fever is a air borne bacterial infection. It causes flu-like symptoms such as a high temperature, muscle pain and headaches and is very dangerous; miss diagnosis is extremely common as it is often mistaken as the common flu.
In Australia Humans usually become infected by inhaling Cattle yard dust carried through the air by the wind, which can be spread up to 18 kilometers from the source.
People most at risk of getting Q fever are those whose occupation and environment brings them into close contact with livestock: Close contact can mean anything up to 18 kilometres depending on the wind.
2. A letter from Queensland Health warn Q fever effects, can be felt up to 5 kilometres from Teys Bros Beenleigh.
3. Teys Bros Beenleigh operational licence from the Queensland Government office of DERM dictates, Teys Bros Beenleigh must not effect anyone or anything beyond its boundaries.
In my opinion, the above points prove Teys Bros Beenleigh are in BREACH of their operational licence and operate in a dangerous and illegal manner. Queensland Governments department of DERM acknowledge their breach, the Queensland Health Department and the Logan City Council are aware of their breach and yet none have taken action to protect the public.
I agree with sentiments with respect to Tey’s Brother’s P/L responsibility to rectify these issues which are causing actionable nuisances etc. This follows my investigation into the land adjacent Tey’s including the Church lots.
