In my opinion, These cattle yards are old; built back in the early 1980’s, this is where the cattle are held before slaughter.
In my opinion, This is where the main point of Q-Fever danger originates from, in the cattle yards, all the dust odour and contaminants of infectious disease originate from here, it is basically the source of any and all danger to the unsuspecting public; holding the cattle in the holding yards as the cattle feed and defecate.

Early 1980s Teys Cattle Yards
All issues centre around the cattle in the cattle yards and as stated they Teys Bros Beenleigh, are so far behind the times because of these cattle yards.
In my opinion, These cattle yards have not been touched for over 30 years, they remain basically the way they were when first built back in the early 80s.

2012 Teys Cattle Yards
Thirty Years and NO modernisation, Thirty Years NO leading edge technology, just the same 30 year old cattle holding yards stuck in the 80s with no care, no responsibility, just a clear neglect and disregard for the health and well being of the general public.
Every other abattoir of Teys Bros Beenleigh’s class in South East Queensland have kept up with safe practices and enclosed their cattle yards in massive sheds with air filtration systems and concrete flooring to eradicate dust, odour and contaminates of infectious diseases to protect the surrounding public, except for Teys Bros Beenleigh.
And even though these cattle yards are behind 10 metres of a dirt mound, In my opinion, the wind can not be contained by some dirt and vegetation.
In 2006, Teys Bros Beenleigh settled out of court with a man claiming to have contracted Q-Fever from the Teys Bros Beenleigh operation. Court documents reveal that he worked on a building site some 500 meters to 1 kilometer away from the factor. This is the same distance as Devine’s Alberi Park; 1 kilometre covers the entire Alberi Park residential estate and puts every man, women, child and pet at HIGH RISK of contracting Q-Fever.
In this report, the expert witness claims that although Teys Bros Beenleigh do everything to protect their workers, they do nothing for the surrounding public, the report goes on to imply no duty of care is extended to the surrounding public and that Teys Bros Beenleigh did not have a effective process in place to protect the local community from the processing plant to the cattle yards.
For over two years, residents have been taking daily photos and it seems like every day that Teys Bros Beenleighallow the cattle to graze directly across from houses and people, completely ignoring the danger of spreading diseases.
Below are some photos taken from peoples front yards, they show how close the cattle are to the street and houses.

I fail to see how the photos here show neglegence, this could be the farm on Loganlea road. I am sure there are plenty of farms arond that would be identical to Teys holding yard. (As for “in my opinion”, people once thought that powerlines gave you cancer, and I spoke to hundreds of people who “in their opinion” thought that they would. As an electrician I could not see it. Then they find the initial study was wrong and powerlines do not give you cancer. If they think this holding yard is dangerous then shut every farm that is not shedded)
Qfever is not new, but if such a risk, Devine should be held liable for building so close to such a toxic wasteland. They should purchase the entire estate back, at current value and bulldoze the whole place. We know that there would not be enough evidence for that to happen, so close Teys brothers.
I intend to buy a property near the South East freeway, which has toxic emission from the traffic. When I move there I shall have the freeway closed.
All true but Teys operate outside their scope of approval. There licence to operate is always in Breach. They have grown so big that they continue to break the law and no one will do anything about it. Logan city Council knows of their breach but continue to look the other way and continue to approve developments that put people at risk. browse the site and read the reports.
“Concerned citizen”; who are you? To post this comment, I have to give my name and yet nowhere do you identify yourself.
Why was Mr Rakatau the only person on the building site to get Q-Fever? Would this be considered normal for none of the other builders to be infected? He says in his statement that he went on to work at 2 other building sites before becoming too ill to work; he has not mentioned where he went in his personal time. Could he have picked up Q-Fever elsewhere? Other animals are known to be carriers.
Have any of the residents in the immediate or surrounding area been infected before or since 2002?
Since the settlement in 2006, has Teys Bros changed any of their procedures that may have helped in containing the spread of Q-Fever to the general public?
I think its appalling for animals being kept in sheds on concrete floors with unnatural light. Animals should roam freely in a paddock with grass, trees and sunlight.
There is a vaccine available for anyone who feels they are at risk of Q-Fever.
At times the smell from Teys Bros is disgusting, forcing me to close all my windows and doors and because I do not want my clothes to smell like rotten meat, I hang them in the garage. I have been told this smell is from the tanning of hides and not from the feedlot or the kill-floor. I’ll sign a petition asking for Teys Bros to relocate any part of their business that creates a foul smell.
My name is Louis Toumbas and my daughter lives in the area. If you browse the website and read the reports you will know why I have set up this site.
If at times you can smell Teys Bros Beenleigh operation, it is possible you could also catch Q fever or any other number of issues from Teys.
The facts are that
1. Q fever is a air borne bacterial infection. It causes flu-like symptoms such as a high temperature, muscle pain and headaches and is very dangerous; miss diagnosis is extremely common as it is often mistaken as the common flu.
In Australia Humans usually become infected by inhaling Cattle yard dust carried through the air by the wind, which can be spread up to 18 kilometers from the source.
People most at risk of getting Q fever are those whose occupation and environment brings them into close contact with livestock: Close contact can mean anything up to 18 kilometres depending on the wind.
2. A letter from Queensland Health warn Q fever effects, can be felt up to 5 kilometres from Teys Bros Beenleigh.
3. Teys Bros Beenleigh operational licence from the Queensland Government office of DERM dictates, Teys Bros Beenleigh must not effect anyone or anything beyond its boundaries.
In my opinion, the above points prove Teys Bros Beenleigh are in BREACH of their operational licence and operate in a dangerous and illegal manner. Queensland Governments department of DERM acknowledge their breach, the Queensland Health Department and the Logan City Council are aware of their breach and yet none have taken action to protect the public.
Don’t some people move to the country to get that kind of view? Or should we lock up every cow in a shed because of the slight chance someone might get sick? Here’s a better idea. We’ll all become vegetarians. Then there will be no more killer cows on the loose.
I love my steak and I love my milk. Laura do you live near cattle or do you live in Sydney? I have nothing against cattle, I do however have a problem with Teys Beenleigh and their out dated cattle yards that are a cesspool of Disease!
You need to think about this a little harder.
The Teys Australia cattle holding yards is Ground Zero. They are out dated and house thousands of different cattle every week.
It is this turnover of cattle and their effects that are dangerous.
A few cattle grazing in the local school or hobby farms is completely different.
All these suburbs are in danger, and as the Queensland Health Department say ‘High Risk”, and again, its not 10 cattle grazing in 20 acres on some hobby farm on luscious green pastures, Its thousands of cattle crammed in holding yards with dirt flooring which dries and is picked up by the wind and spread through the air.
But don’t the photos above show the cattle in Teys Bros grazing in paddocks? Also, if the disease can be spread through fecal matter, well, cows produce that, no matter where they are located, how many there are, or how big the land is.
I live in Beenleigh, just up the road from Teys Bros. I have lived within your 5km ‘danger zone’ for the past 24 years, my parents for the past 28. I don’t believe there is any more risk from Teys Bros than there is from any other rural property with cattle around Beenleigh (and I can think of at least a dozen). A lot of these are not hobby farms, but actual properties with dozens of cattle. Even the report on your site that says there is a risk zone of 18kms says that there are multiple properties within that radius that could have potentially have infected that man. It is inconclusive that Teys was the actual source.
Laura, you need to think about this a little harder.

Your comment of ” I don’t believe there is any more risk from Teys Bros than there is from any other rural property with cattle around Beenleigh (and I can think of at least a dozen)” is made out of ignorance. How many of these properties transport cattle from out west for the specific purpose of slaughter. How may of these properties have Holding Yards of dirt where thousands of cattle a week urinate and defecate in a defined area. Then this dirt becomes dust and then carried on the wind to unsuspecting public.
You have not met Mr X, what has happened to him is criminal, you are blessed that it hasn’t happened to your or your family.
Going by your map and ummm… “opinion”, the whole of south east queensland is at risk of Q fever. There is an beef abattoir at cannon hill and one at dinmore. The 18km circle you put around teys on your page https://teysbeenleighdanger.com/2012/03/27/teys-spread-q-fever/, it would cross over if you put an 18km circle around both cannon hill and dinmore, not too mention Brisbane CBD would probably be within a 5km circle around the cannon hill abattoir.
Then like other people have mentioned, livestock farms all through out south east queensland, including the one on loganlea road loganlea, just a few kms away from teys.
On top of all the livestock farms and abattoirs throughout southeast Queensland there are many animals that can carry Q fever and many ways to contract Q fever as stated at http://boardtalk.vpb.nsw.gov.au/page/Q_Fever_Zoonotic_Disease_-_35
In saying all that I was shocked when they started building houses so close to Teys, but I fail to see why they should be shut down. Unless you want every farm and abatoir in south east queensland that have been around long before all the houses, shut down aswell, oh and the queen st mall because of all the pigeons that could be carry q fever.
Should the developers and council be held accountable, maybe… but a company that has been there since the early 80’s… come on.
I think you could have done alot better with this website if you tried to educate people rather than use exaggerated scare tatics.
I was looking at buying this house (11 Benjul Drive, Beenleigh) 1.5 km away and thank you to this website I have decided against making an offer. I do not want my family especially childeren getting Q fever or the after effect of Q Fever Syndrome. This website is a public service and thank you. I hope TEYS gets shut down.
